The collection
The Basque Railway Museum houses one of the most outstanding railway collections in Europe, featuring steam, diesel and electric locomotives, railcars, and a selection of carriages and wagons.
In addition, the museum has one of the most complete collections of machine tools in the Basque Country from the former mechanical workshop of the Urola Railway. This facility has been preserved as it was in 1925, with an old electric motor that runs its 16 machines through a complex system of pulleys, belts and busbars.
The surprising facilities of the old power plant, with its original mercury steam rectification equipment, reflect the most modern technology from one century ago.
The first floor of the central building of the former Azpeitia Station houses an exceptional collection of uniforms used in the railway from the end of the 19th century to the age of HS trains (AVE). On the second floor, you will find one of the best collections of railway clocks in the world that will take you on a journey through time.
Photographic exhibition: 130 years of electric mobility in the Basque Country
Historically, Euskadi is the entire peninsula’s undisputed leader of electric mobility. After 130 years of experience, it is interesting to take a look at the extensive history of electric mobility in Euskadi in an exhibition of 16 panels displayed at the Museum’s depot, along with some of the vehicles involved in this technological adventure. Also, at the building next to the traction substation, visitors can inspect the complex traction energy transformation and rectification systems used by the Urola Railway since 1925.
