Historically, Euskadi is the entire peninsula’s undisputed leader of electric mobility. The State’s first electric tram ran between Bilbao and Santurtzi in 1896, and also the first electric train operated on Mount Ulía in 1902. Euskotren is still operating the peninsula’s oldest electrified rail routing, between Amara and Loiola stations in Donostia. The line was electrified 116 years ago in 1903.
After 130 years of experience, it is interesting to take a look at the extensive history of electric mobility in Euskadi in an exhibition of 16 panels displayed at the Museum’s depot, along with some of the vehicles involved in this technological adventure. Also, at the building next to the traction substation, visitors can inspect the complex traction energy transformation and rectification systems used by the Urola Railway since 1925.
